Google will let you better mute annoying mobile, online ads

To mute reminder ads, sign into your Google account on desktop or mobile. If they mute an ad for that hotel booking site on their smartphone it will also be muted on their notebook. But later, you're on a totally different site and see an ad promoting the same area rug from the same retailer. We should see these options rolling out today, so either jump over to your Ad Settings or go track down an unsavory ad to give them a spin for yourself.

"Reminder ads like these can be useful, but if you aren't shopping for Snow Boot Co.'s boots anymore, then you don't need a reminder about them", Jon Krafcik, group product manager of data privacy and transparency at Google, said in a blog post. Muting "reminder ads" can be seen as an extension to the already existing feature, allowing a user to mute ads that they may have found interesting before, but are not interested in now. In the coming months, Google will expand this to include YouTube, Search, and Gmail.

Additionally, Google is extending Mute This Ad to more apps and websites that show Google ads.

The Mute This Ad feature has been available since 2012 and allows users to dismiss a Google display ad by clicking on the "X" in the upper right corner of the ad. Users can then provide feedback on why they no longer want to see the ad.

Google says it received more than 5 billion notices from users who muted ads that weren't relevant and that it removed more than a million ads from its ad network based on feedback received from the Mute This Ad tool.

The first change of note is the ability to mute "reminder ads". Don't know what reminder ads are?

With Google's new mute tool, you can go into your ad settings and block ads from specific advertisers for up to 90 days. Of course, this will not affect websites and apps that use non-Google ad services.

Along with the Chrome 64 update, Google is also adding HDR support to Chrome 64 for Windows users, which will require a PC with the Fall Creators Update. A Google spokesperson said it's been considered and could be a possibility if there is enough advertiser demand for that kind of information.
