Sky signals the end of the satellite dish

Sky signals the end of the satellite dish

Sky is planning to make all its channels available to internet users, removing the need for Sky customers to install a satellite dish.

The UK broadcaster said the forthcoming option was "major development" and would allow the company to enter new markets.

This will allow customers who can not have a dish or do not want one to still watch Sky programming, a spokesperson confirmed.

However, with growth in over-the-top (OTT) streaming services such as Amazon Video and Netflix, and the fundamental change in television-viewing habits this has precipitated, Sky has been under increasing competitive pressure.

"Looking ahead, we expect the consumer environment to remain challenging, however we remain confident in our strategy and our ability to execute our plans", Darroch added.

"In the UK & Ireland Sky Q is now in 2 million homes".

Churn, the 12-month rolling rate at which customers leave the business, was 11.2 per cent in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Sky's biggest market, down from 11.6 per cent a year earlier.

Reporting its results for the six months to 31 December, Sky said average revenue per user in the United Kingdom and Ireland - its biggest market - fell £1 to £46 a month.

A new USB stick will allow customers to watch Now TV content on any television - including European Union countries when an expected change to "geoblocking" rules comes into effect this summer. Sky Q, a hybrid satellite and IPTV service, now has two million subscribers, while the Sky Mobile service added 131,000 customers in Q2, contributing to a total of 335,000.

During the half-year, the firm reported like-for-like revenue up 5 per cent to £6.7bn, with pre-tax profits up £106m to £448m compared with the same period the year before.

21st Century Fox now owns a 39 percent stake in Sky and has offered to buy the remaining 61 percent. "We're enhancing the Sky Cinema proposition, having agreed a new deal in the United Kingdom and Germany with Warner Bros.", Sky said.

This week the the UK's Competition and Markets Authority ruled that the proposed takeover was.

He has agreed to sell most of Fox's assets to Disney so the latter may end up owning Sky.

As of 08:38 GMT, Sky's share price had added 0.50 percent to 1,028.58p, outperforming the benchmark FTSE 100 index which has slipped marginally into the red and now stands 0.03 percent lower at 7,641.63 points.
