At least 17 killed, 110 wounded in Afghan auto bomb attack

Interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said the bomber used the ambulance to pass through one checkpoint, saying he was taking a patient to a nearby hospital.

At least 63 people have been killed and 151 injured after a suicide bomb attack in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

Member of Parliament Mirwais Yasini, who witnessed the blast, recounted that an ambulance neared the police checkpoint and exploded.

Officials said the casualty number could rise since the attack happened during lunchtime when many people were in the street.

Public healthy ministry spokesperson Mohammad Ismayeel Kawosi confirmed the numbers, the channel reported. Kabul has seen a slew of terror attacks in recent days. After getting through this checkpoint, he detonated the bomb at another checkpoint. The force of the blast shattered windows of surrounding buildings while causing few low-rise structures to collapse. The Council was set up in 2010 to negotiate with the insurgent group. "It was really huge - all our windows are broken", Hassina Safi, a member of High Peace Council, told AFP. "We're still counting dead bodies of last week's InterCon attack when a dozen plus killed & scores wounded in today's vehicle bombing on a public road", tweeted Lotfullah Najafizada.

The explosion comes exactly a week after Taliban militants stormed the luxury Intercontinental hotel in Kabul, killing at least 22 people, the majority foreigners.

Preliminary reports say the explosion occurred close to the building which formerly housed Afghanistan's Interior Ministry. (AP Photo/Massoud Hossaini) A wounded man is assisted at the site of an explosion in downtown Kabul, Afghanistan, Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018.
