France Is Officially Shutting All Coal-Fired Power Plants in Three Years

France Is Officially Shutting All Coal-Fired Power Plants in Three Years

During his speech to politicians and business leaders on Wednesday, the French president said he wanted to "make France a model in the fight against climate change".

"France has been very much affected by structural change and its relationship with globalization".

The 2021 goal sets a more aggressive target than the timeline advanced by Macron's predecessor, Francois Hollande, who sought to shut down the country's coal-powered plants by 2023.

CEOs or top executives from Coca-Cola, Google, JP Morgan and Alibaba are among those expected.

Switching back to his native tongue, Macron also noted globalisation "is going through a major crisis" with some states engaging in a free-for-all for their own benefit.

"Globalization must make sense to people and improve their lives".

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the United States is not starting a trade war but trying to level the playing field of global commerce and fend off Chinese protectionism, including a "direct threat" in high-tech goods. He underscored the importance of visibility as critical to guaranteeing predictability, and thus stability.

In terms of France, he said the country needed "to find its place in world competition", especially as the country was "a nation of entrepreneurs". The first lady's office did not return CNN's request for comment. "This year will be the year where we have to redesign a ten-year strategy for Europe", said Macron.

Argentina's Macri also condemned the "unacceptable authoritarian slide" of Venezuela under Maduro and called for "transparent elections", adding: "It has not been a democracy for some time". "We can create a lot of jobs with such a strategy". "We need to renounce unbridled tax optimization", he said.
