US Slaps 'America First' Duties On Foreign Solar Goods, Washers

US Slaps 'America First' Duties On Foreign Solar Goods, Washers

Meanwhile the Office of the United States Trade Representative said in a statement, "US trade representative Robert Lighthizer announced today that president Trump has approved recommendations to impose safeguard tariffs on imported large residential washing machines and imported solar cells and modules".

China's Ministry of Commerce Tuesday expressed strong dissatisfaction with a USA decision to impose steep tariffs on imported solar products and washing machines, calling the move an "abuse" of trade remedies.

Only about 14 percent of those 260,000 jobs are in manufacturing.

"China's solar industry has been growing at a fast pace in recent years, making itself a target of protectionism in some countries", the MIIT said, adding the disputes have hindered Chinese solar companies from expanding overseas and would add to the costs in the global solar market. "This is a step forward for this high-tech solar manufacturing industry we pioneered right here in America".

Companies affected by these tariffs though have hit back at Trump, pointing out that these tariffs will likely cause significant price rises for consumers. So, the whole package is a loser for U.S. jobs and clean energy. Sad. Suniva and SolarWorld requested tariffs of 24 cents/watt on solar cells and 32 cents/watt on modules.

His administration is imposing an immediate tariff of 30% on most imported solar modules, with the rate declining before phasing out after four years. GTM Research estimates that a 30% tariff amounts to an additional $0.10-$0.15/watt.

"While we believe the decision will be significantly harmful to our industry and the economy, we appreciate that the president and the administration listened to our arguments", Hopper said.

What does this mean for California?

Kadish says the vast majority of people working in the solar industry are installing the panels. The agency notes this prize is in addition to total DOE funding of up to $400 million for solar projects and technologies in 2017.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) in U.S. however expressed disappointment in the decision, stating it will cost 23,000 jobs and the delay or cancellation of billions of dollars in solar investments.

If the Trump Administration wants to protect United States workers, making things more expensive for the great majority of the solar industry is not the way to go.

Is this really about saving a few thousand solar jobs or about stalling meaningful progress to lower greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change?
