Federer Into 30th Grand Slam Final After Chung Retires With Blisters

Federer Into 30th Grand Slam Final After Chung Retires With Blisters

The bespectacled 21-year-old, conqueror of six-times Australian Open victor Novak Djokovic, suffered from blisters on his foot before retiring from the match while trailing 6-1 5-2 against 19-times grand slam champion Roger Federer.

Federer was cruising 6-1 5-2 when Chung, who was unable to muster much resistance throughout Friday's semi-final, called it a day.

He faces No. 6-seeded Marin Cilic on Sunday in what will be his record seventh Australian Open final and 30th at a Grand Slam.

Federer beat Cilic in straight sets in the Wimbledon final a year ago, the Croatian reduced to tears as he also struggled with blisters, but the world number two is expecting a closer encounter at Melbourne Park.

Trailing 4-1 in the second set, the world No 58 sent for the trainer and took a medical time-out to have treatment on the blister. "But I think I did right thing". I'm incredibly happy to be in the finals, but not like this.

"When he arrived, I didn't want to bother him". I've played with blisters in the past and it hurts a lot.

However, the Croatian has powered his way into the decider and looked particularly impressive in his quarter-final against Rafael Nadal before the Spaniard had to retire through injury.

Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki kisses her trophy after defeating Romania's Simona Halep in the women's singles final at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018.

Going into the match with Chung, Federer had won six of his 13 semifinals at Melbourne Park.

The youngster said he had gained plenty of confidence after embarking upon his deepest run at a grand slam.

You'd hope that with the finals next up the network has heard the voices of tennis fans and won't miss any more games due to excessive advertising. I don't know what to tell you. It ain't just an easy trip to the finals.

While the semi-final wasn't exactly an all-time classic, much like the game the night before, fans are still wanting to actually watch the match and not an Apple ad. I was able to sort of bounce back. Maybe that's also one of the reasons I'm still out there'.

To have the chance to banish that memory so soon in another grand slam final will make Cilic risky on Sunday. But I played a good match. "I have to (have) a good recovery".

So he's well poised for Sunday's match against No. 6-seeded Marin Cilic. From the return, moving, forehand, backhand, serving, I think everything is in a good, solid spot. Because he (Chung) has played so many matches in the row, I think that's why it was a build-up. Federer beat Cilic in last year's Wimbledon final.
