Top 5 moments from the 2018 Grammy Awards

Top 5 moments from the 2018 Grammy Awards

After a tumultuous political year, the Grammys took a stand for the rights of women and immigrants - but the top awards went to a singer whose mind is on sex, booze and parties.

The Recording Academy, the body of 13,000 music professionals, also gave him Song of the Year, which awards songwriting, for another track on the album - "That's What I Like", an old-school ode to making love in high style.

Mars is now one of seven artists to win the three biggest Grammy Awards in a single night, which are Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Before its broadcast, many questioned why Lorde, nominated for Album of the Year for Melodrama, was not performing while her male peers took the stage (her mother hinted at the latent sexism at the Grammys). The mix of relevant and vital commentary with tone-deaf, cringeworthy sloganeering was most irritating in the transition from Kesha's performance to U2's.

But Kesha was also passed over for awards, with "Praying" edged out for Best Pop Solo Performance by Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" about putting the moves on a woman at a bar. Bono and the Edge introduced the Album of the Year award, and Bono offered a bizarrely halting and defensive assertion of the value of the award - which only underscores how little Bruno Mars's win means.

The present was the flawless way to celebrate her epic duet with Bruno Mars which took home no less than six Grammy awards! With two of the most prominent deaths this year being from suicide, the poignant performance by Logic, Khalid and Alessia Cara (who won best new artist) made for a fitting tribute and certainly one of the show's best moments. "Despacito" set a record for most weeks at No. 1 ever. Patti LuPone performed the classic song "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", giving musical fans something to perk up about. Others argued that Mars is a person of color since he is a Hawaiian native and is of Puerto Rican and Filipino descent.

The losses that gnawed away at the heart of the culture for years instilled cautious optimism last November at the sight of Hov and Lamar's nominations.

Mars has now won 11 career Grammys. But OMG - you hear Clark play that great guitar and realize Berry was doing that more than 60 years ago.

"I just want to say there are some incredible artists out there making music that deserve to be acknowledged that don't always get acknowledged because of popularity contests or numbers games and that's kind of unfortunate", she said.

Lady Gaga experienced significant lifts from the performance of her hits "Joanne" (+41%/+600 units) and "Million Reasons" (+662%/+3500 units).

But the industry either preferred Mars , or the vote for rappers split. If you didn't it might be a good idea to look it up on YouTube; it wont disappoint.
