Apple Confirms Investigations by DOJ, SEC Over iPhone Slowdowns

Apple Confirms Investigations by DOJ, SEC Over iPhone Slowdowns

The US government organisations will look to determine if Apple had violated securities laws with its disclosures about a software update that resulted in older iPhone being deliberately slowed down to preserve the health of ageing batteries, Bloomberg reports. "As such, we believe Apple is unlikely to have enough spare resources to develop a new iPhone model for launch in 2Q18".

Numerous people suing Apple say that they would not have bought newer iPhones if they knew that they could fix the issues with their older models by simply replacing the battery.

"We've been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process", the statement read. In said statement, Apple suggested that their next iOS update would include a kill switch for the battery health feature update they'd included previously.

"Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love", said Apple.

These stability and performance boosts through the next versions of macOS and iOS could make way for what might be one of the most important features to come to both operating systems in years.

"We have received questions from some government agencies and we are responding to them", an Apple spokeswoman said.

UBS repeated earlier concerns that discounted battery replacements may lead more iPhone owners to hold onto their existing phones for longer. The price to replace a battery was cut from $79 to $29, with the deal available worldwide through December 2018.

Despite its status as the second-largest smartphone market in the world, India has presented major challenges for Apple, due to high price sensitivity and regulations impacting foreign products. This growth helped Apple receive a boost in the loyalty for its iOS, with a new record of 96 percent in the US. Its support website now estimates an estimated 2-4 week delay in Canada.

Apple on Wednesday confirmed it is fielding questions from USA agencies about its move to slow down older iPhones as batteries weaken.

The iPhone SE was first introduced by Apple back in March 2016 as its first budget-friendly device. Problem is, when it rolled out the said update, it didn't fully disclose that the slowdown would occur.

As many as 50 proposed class actions suits have been filed by consumers, over the company's latest software update.
