Harley Motorcycle Sales Drop 6.8% in 2017

Harley Motorcycle Sales Drop 6.8% in 2017

Harley-Davidson is serious about electric motorcycles though. "Our Kansas City manufacturing assembly operations will leave a legacy of safety, quality, collaboration and manufacturing leadership", Harley-Davidson President and Chief Executive Officer Matt Levatich says in the company report. If Harley's project stays on-schedule it could become the first of the old-guard of motorcycle firms to dive headfirst into the electric bike waters.

The overall motorcycle market is facing some headwinds in the coming years.

"The EV motorcycle market is in its infancy today, but we believe premium Harley-Davidson electric motorcycles will help drive excitement and participation in the sport globally".

The latest tactic in a multi-year "manufacturing optimization initiative" is to consolidate its Kansas City motorcycle assembly plant into the York plant, which now assembles Touring, CVO and Trikes. The company saw sales dip 6.7 percent in 2017, and is projecting a continuation of that decline in 2018.

Like other Harley-Davidson bikes, the electric motorcycle will be a luxury product, but there is still no word on its price or what it will be called. Bank of New York Mellon Corp now owns 3,183,477 shares of the company's stock valued at $153,476,000 after acquiring an additional 488,628 shares in the last quarter. Legal General Gp Inc Public Limited Company holds 0% or 235,596 shares in its portfolio. Harley-Davidson had 87 analyst reports since July 22, 2015 according to SRatingsIntel.

Harley-Davidson, known for its American-made motorcycles, is expanding into all-electric vehicles with its first e-bike expected to hit the road in the next 18 months.

On 11/28/2017 Harley-Davidson announced a Quarterly dividend of $0.37 2.91% with an ex dividend date of 12/14/2017 which will be payable on 12/29/2017.

To counteract those trends, Harley launched a 10-year plan that included creating 2 million new riders in the USA, launching 100 new models and growing worldwide sales to 50 percent of the business.

Harley-Davidson will be closing two operations, another in Kansas after shipments plummeted. With its customer base aging out of the market and sales flagging, the Motor Company needs to attract a younger, more diverse following, and we're about to see if they can somehow reconcile this quieter technology with its long-established rebel image. One of those brands is Indian's most direct competitor, Harley-Davidson.

A spokesperson for Harley-Davidson, Michael Pflughoeft, said in a statement that it's "simply not true" that jobs are being shipped overseas to Asia and South America.
