Nintendo Switch has already outsold the Wii U

Nintendo has reported its most profitable quarter in nearly a decade as global sales of its new Switch console soared in the runup to Christmas. Half of the Nintendo Switch's sales probably came when the system launched and a few months that followed, and most likely a lot of units were sold once Mario Odyssey released, and there was even a bundle with Odyssey packaged in.

After the Switch worldwide release as of a year ago, the device has accrued a number of sold units of 14.86 million as of December 31st, 2017.

The company is targeting Switch sales of nearly 17m by the end of March and 20m by the end of its next financial year in March 2019. This was helped out by its line up of exclusive games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, the latter of which moved 9.07 million units of 2017.

"Switch sales during the holiday season were stronger than expected in Japan, the United States and Europe", Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said at an earnings briefing. And while the Switch is still lagging behind contemporaries Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in third-party support, the console is certainly outperforming Wii U in this field with games like Doom, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Rocket League leading the way.

But while Microsoft and Sony have been busy pushing ultra-high definition gaming, Nintendo has focused on what it does best: making really fun games. Odd, perhaps - but it shows the company is not afraid to innovate.

Nintendo has raised its operating profit forecast for the year to the end of March by a third, after phenomenal Switch sales fuelled the company's most profitable quarter since 2009.

"Nintendo has been back in full force", he said.

The Kyoto-based video game giant said it now expects annual net profit of 120 billion yen (US$1.1 billion), a 41.2-percent rise from a forecast last October when it almost doubled its previous net profit projection.
