Top surfwear CEO goes missing off coast of France

The French coastguard on Tuesday searched for Pierre Agnes, the chief executive of USA surfwear retailer Boardriders Inc, after his 36-foot (10.97 m) sailboat was found washed up on the country's Atlantic coast.

Pierre Agnes, who's the CEO of Quiksilver parent company Boardriders, went on a fishing trip Tuesday morning from southwestern France. According to Agence France-Press, after Agnes left the harbor he told authorities that because of fog, he would return later than he'd initially planned.

According to local reports, French authorities have deployed multiple boats and helicopters throughout the vicinity to search for Agnes but had to end search efforts late Tuesday. Shortly after, four vessels and four helicopters were sent out in search of Agnes.

French rescue teams are expected to resume search efforts on Wednesday morning. Now, family, friends, and an entire surf community are waiting to hear more news.

Boardriders Inc. released a statement saying it is devastated by the news, and given that the situation on the ground is still evolving, its statement will be limited.

He managed the California-based company from Quiksilver's European headquarters in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a seaside town not far from France's border with Spain. As CEO, he's responsible for overseeing all aspects of Quiksilver's operations, finance, sales and marketing organizations in their respective territories.

Boardriders had most recently been successful in its takeover bid for ailing surf label Billabong with the deal valuing the brand at $155 million.

His disappearance has caused great anguish in the surfing world. "Please keep Pierre and his family in your prayers". Get your FREE trial or subscribe now.
