AMD to ramp up GPU production to meet mining-related demand spike

While its fourth-quarter revenue of $1.48 billion and net income of $61 million is down from the $1.64 billion revenue and $71 million profit of the third quarter, it shows sustained profit and a big shift from the $1.11 billion revenue and $51 million loss of the same quarter a year prior. That exceeded analysts' average estimate of $1.41 billion (roughly Rs. 8,900 crores), according to Thomson Reuters.

For the full year, AMD reported revenue of $5.33 billion and net income of $43 million or 4 cents per share. That included $958 million contributed by AMD's Computing and Graphics division, a figure that was 60 percent higher than the same quarter a year ago.

During the latest quarter, revenue was up 34% year over year, primarily driven by strong sales of Radeon graphics and Ryzen processors.

"We expanded our Ryzen CPU family further into the consumer market with the introduction of the AMD Ryzen mobile processor with Radeon Vega graphics, combining the power of our Zen CPU and Vega GPU architectures into the fastest processor in the industry for ultrathin notebooks". Sequentially, revenue decreased 37 percent driven by seasonally lower semi-custom SoC revenue, AMD said.

As a result of United States tax reform, AMD said it received a $18 million tax credit.

"Security is and always has been a fundamental focus for AMD across all our products", Su said. For instance, AMD's mitigation efforts, including the deployment of software or firmware updates to address security vulnerabilities, could result in unintended consequences such as adverse performance system operation issues and reboots. Any of these actions by AMD's customers could adversely affect its revenue.

For fiscal 2018, AMD will adopt a new revenue recognition standard, but expects the impact on revenue to be immaterial.

During the same call, Dr. Su admitted that the company's Zen+ products will not include design changes to mitigate against the Spectre speculative execution vulnerability but will ship with microcode protections instead with true hardware protection due for the Zen 2 release expected in 2019.

The company's shares, which were up slightly in after-hours trading recovered from an initial 6 percent selloff.
