199 gold medals, 199 silver medals and 275 bronze medals are at stake in the Khelo India School Games.

Modi also announced that his government has chose to reward the childhood coaches of sportspersons who excel at the world stage for the country. I am confident that India will scale these heights.

The Prime Minister expressed happiness that youngsters from rural India and smaller cities are excelling as sportspersons.

"These are also youngsters who need support, which we want to provide". This is why athletes are special. Mr. Modi's visit will be the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Palestine and comes weeks after India voted in favour of Palestine's rights over Jerusalem in the United Nations General Assembly. "It energises the entire nation". The ceremony showcased the rich "Guru-Shishya" tradition of the country in grand style. Depictions of numerous coach-athlete combinations in sports ranging from archery to wrestling, from across the country, were part of the spectacle.

The Khelo India programme has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grassroots by building a strong framework for all sports played in the country and establishing India as a great sporting nation. Promising athletes would be assisted with an amount of Rs 5 lakh per annum for the next 8 years, to prepare them for various national and global tournaments.

The sporting event, to be conducted from January 31 to February 8, aims to scout talent at the ground-level and nurture them for the future.

The KISG is being held across 16 disciplines in the U-17 category and 5,000 school children from 29 states and seven union territories have arrived to participate in the event that ends on February 8. Every year, 1000 athletes would be added.
