Three soldiers killed as avalanche hits borer post in Machil

Srinagar-Three soldiers were killed and another was injured on Friday after a snow avalanche swept away an army post came in Machil sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Friday.

Avalanches have caused some of the heaviest tolls for the Indian and Pakistani armies camping in the region.

The Chief Minister has conveyed her sympathies to the families of dead soldiers.

The deceased soldiers were identified as Havaldar Kamlesh Kumar, Naik Balbeer and Sepoy Rajinder.

"In an unfortunate incident of avalanche in Machil sector today, the Army lost three valiant soldiers", defence spokesperson said in a brief statement in Srinagar.

The avalanche struck two days after a 24-hour avalanche warning was issued in several districts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Kupwara, on Wednesday, shortly after a 6.2 magnitude natural disaster on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region jolted parts of north India. The SASE issued a medium-danger avalanche warning of level-3 in higher reaches of Baramulla district and low danger warning of level-2 in Kupwara, Bandipore, Shopian and Kargil districts. Earlier in the first week of January, eleven people, including a Border Roads Organisation officer and a year-old baby girl died when snow avalanches hit at two places in Tangdhar area of Kupwara.
