Warriors May Pursue LeBron James In Free Agency This Offseason

ESPN.com's Chris Haynes reported on Thursday morning that Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, who is set to become a free agent this summer, would meet with the Golden State Warriors if they were able to create a max-salary roster spot.

James, who nearly certainly will become an unrestricted free agent this summer, said Friday that the story by ESPN's Chris Haynes was "nonsense" and claims he'll handle his free agency at the appropriate time, a.k.a. this summer after the season.

Haynes also said James "wouldn't rule out" the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets or his current employer, the Cleveland Cavaliers. James has never exercised a player's option in his contract, so he will likely be a free agent, though he could choose to re-sign with the Cavs.

LeBron can opt out of his contract after this season, and his impending free agency has had the National Basketball Association in a frenzy since last summer.

However, Smith also clarified beforehand that the story is coming "strictly" from the Warriors-not from James or anyone in his camp-because they are "an ultra-aggressive franchise". James has three championships now, and being a cog in the Warriors' wheel of dominance does not sound that appealing. Sources have said that James is looking for a place with a winning culture and structure, boxes the Spurs organization checks.

The Cavaliers, who were expected to meet the Warriors in the National Basketball Association finals for a fourth time this year, are third in the Eastern Conference and have lost six of their last 10 games. Golden State now has the largest payroll in the league and four All-Stars under contract beyond this season.

"Anything else about this team, I can answer it good, bad or ugly". James adds that his only focus is trying to get the Cavaliers back to a fourth straight NBA Finals. "I don't give a damn how close they are, if it's my kids, my wife or whatever". But like, I think it's just unfair to my teammates that come here every day.

That, of course, won't stop speculation regarding James' future from continuing.

"He's gotta get No. 23 from [Draymond Green]", he said.
