White House Spokesman Says 'No Changes' Will Be Made at Justice Department

White House Spokesman Says 'No Changes' Will Be Made at Justice Department

CNN, which first reported the story, said the December meeting occurred as Rosenstein prepared to testify before the House Judiciary Committee. True, the need to work with Republicans has disciplined Trump more than commonly thought, in ways ranging from McGahn's dissuading him from firing Mueller to Trump's endorsing Mitch McConnell's preferred candidate in the Alabama Senate primary. Sessions and Rosenstein met with Trump at the White House the day before Comey was sacked, and the president asked them to put in writing a rationale for the dismissal.

Rosenstein is the one who appointed special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Russian meddling in the 2016 election shortly after Trump fired James B. Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director, and reports suggest he's been in Trump's crosshairs ever since.

"The GOP memo is a disgrace", Trump said in the Oval Office Friday.

"I think Rosenstein is going to have to come to the Congress and explain his role in extending it", DeSantis said.

"Of course, we're all on your team, Mr. President", Rosenstein replied, according to CNN. He wrote the memo severely criticizing then-FBI Director James Comey.

Despite Trump's comments, two White House officials told the Associated Press there was no consideration or expectation for Rosenstein to leave his job.

President Donald Trump had appeared to raise that possibility earlier on Friday when asked whether he retained confidence in Rosenstein in the fallout over a Republican memo about the ongoing Russian Federation probe.

'We write to inform you that we would consider such an unwarranted act as an attempt to obstruct justice in the Russian Federation investigation, ' the lawmakers wrote.

But in a letter to the White House, Democratic congressional leaders rushed to Rosenstein's defense. This is the ethical dilemma facing the deputy attorney general and he needs to make a choice: Is he loyal to Trump, or faithful to the Constitution? Yet a coordinated effort to oust Rosenstein is a chilling potential outcome because of what it might mean not just for the Trump-Russia investigation, but for the independence of the Justice Department. His views have been validated by a chorus of conservative voices, including those on Fox News, which he watches regularly. But he went on to declare that established standards set by past presidents "permit declassification when the public interest in disclosure outweighs any need to protect the information".

It also calls him "a weak careerist at the Justice Department, protecting liberal Obama holdovers and the deep state, instead of following the rule of law". Along with FBI Director Christopher Wray, he made a last-ditch plea this week to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly about the dangers of releasing the document.
