Harry Kane dived for Spurs penalty, says Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk

Harry Kane dived for Spurs penalty, says Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk

Discussing the first penalty awarded when Liverpool keeper Loris Karius brought down Kane, Van Dijk insisted the Spurs stiker was offside.

Kane missed the penalty but redeemed himself from the spot deep into added time after Van Dijk was adjudged to have fouled Erik Lamela - the striker's 100th Premier League goal.

Former Liverpool player Dietmar Hamann believes his old side need more than just Virgil van Dijk to consistently challenge for titles.

Virgil van Dijk returns for Liverpool at centre-back for the Reds' game against Tottenham Hotspur.

I think they've lacked that holding midfielder for a while now so unless they bring in someone who really protects the back four. You see him (Kane) diving clearly and no one is talking about that. I think the first goal was offside and then [for the second one] it is a decision the ref already made and the ref is closer than the linesman. "It was good for us that it got saved".

"I don't think that is a penalty, same with the first one". The second one is a clear foul by Virgil van Dijk - it's an fantastic decision as the referee and the assistant are so focused.

"It's clear in these situations the opposition wants to go down, wants to cause these type of problems", said Klopp. But the result was massively influenced by the linesman's decisions. That is also clearly not a penalty.

"He (the assistant referee) wanted to be middle of interest and he is".

Moussa Dembele starts in midfield, supported by Christian Eriksen, while Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are deployed up top.

"It was a good game for the fans to watch". I thought it was a dive. The feeling is we dropped two points.

He'll be partnered by Dejan Lovren, much maligned by the Liverpool faithful, at the heart of the home defence.

"Both were a penalty and nothing to say, it is not controversial - it is nothing. It's important to recognise when they are right because it's a very hard job for them", he told Sky Sports .
