PLO Calls for Formal Disengagement from Israel

PLO Calls for Formal Disengagement from Israel

The holy city dominated world attention after U.S. President Donald Trump on December 6 recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, increasing the tension across the region.

PLO leaders are meeting after the Palestinian Central Council - another arm of the organisation - called for the step last month.

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat has taken the anti-American rhetoric coming from Ramallah a step further, accusing the Trump administration of seeking to foment an uprising to remove Mahmoud Abbas from the scene, The Times of Israel reported.

The PLO executive committee also slammed what it described as "the US blackmail" and "distortion attempts against the Palestinian leadership". "I'm not saying that we don't make mistakes; every society and every government makes mistakes", Erekat said. By unilaterally favoring the Israelis, Trump sacrificed the United States' credibility in the eyes of the Palestinians.

Haley condemned his "hateful speech" in a recent Palestinian conference, adducing it as proof that Abbas is not interested in peace. He rejected any American role in peace talks.

President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to address the General Assembly of the United Nations later this month and is determined to present request to recognize Palestine as a full member state. "He invoked an ugly and fictional past, reaching back to the 17th century to paint Israel as a colonialist project engineered by European powers", Haley said.

Instead of seriously negotiating an "ultimate deal" between the Israelis and Palestinians as he had promised, the president exacerbated the conflict.

Since 1967, multiple US administrations have characterized Israel's construction of settlements in the West Bank as "ill-advised", "unnecessarily provocative", and "illegal". "On the contrary - they are the ones taking several steps".

"I ask here today, where is the Palestinian King Hussein? His recent actions demonstrate the total opposite", Haley said. The U.S. administration is itself saying that it's not an honest broker in the peace process.
