AUDIO | Akron toddler dies after being found unresponsive in cold

The toddler, who was identified by the Akron Police Department as 2-year-old Wynter Parker, was rushed to Akron Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said. Lucas said she has seen both children outside alone before.

Wynter's mum returned from the shops to find her little girl motionless at around 3.30pm and frantically called 911.

The Summit County medical examiner's office is scheduled to perform an autopsy on Monday to determine the child's official cause of death.

The temperatures in Akron ranged from 12 to 19 degrees on Friday.

The two-year-old girl's mother called police on Friday after finding the little girl unconscious outside.

Wynter's mother found her when she arrived home.

The case remains under investigation, according to the Plain Dealer.

Wynter's father, who works a night shift, fell asleep while he was watching the girl.

Neighbors of the Doty Drive home said they often saw the two children of the home, a girl and a boy, playing outside without parent supervision.

A memorial of stuffed animals was on the porch of the family's apartment building.

When authorities knocked on her door, Lucas says she recalls being anxious before bursting into tears.

"It was a few times where I had to take both of her kids home", Christal Lucas said.

"I cried because I just don't understand how a 2-year-old could be outside and you not know", Crystal Lucas told Fox affiliate WJW. "It was freezing and that was my biggest worry when the cops came", Lucas said.

Other neighbors also said they heard arguing outside the apartment on several occasions, Fox 8 reported. "It's just a very sad situation, it literally broke my heart".
