Free Black Panther Screening Set for Central Arkansas Kids

Nevertheless, "Black Panther" pounces toward the head of the class in a way that should make the King, and his key subjects, a cornerstone of an already-formidable roster.

In the film, T'Challa, using his superhuman abilities as the Black Panther, seeks revenge on those responsible for killing his father.

First up to whet fan appetites is Marvel's Black Panther, bringing us a rousing standalone adventure for the eponymous African king, who we first encountered in a snazzy vibranium-enriched bodysuit in the superhero battle royale Captain America: Civil War.

Overall, Black Panther ranks as the sixth-longest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, falling behind Captain America: Civil War (148 minutes), Age of Ultron (144 minutes), The Avengers (143 minutes), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (138 minutes), and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (136 minutes).

In realitly, the problem has been less about audiences not wanting to see black heroes rise up, but more that the superhero films in which they've been given an opportunity to do so have had poor scripts or were trying to be both satirical and heroic. If it falls six points, Black Panther will still be on even footing with the first Iron Man, which helped kick off the MCU almost 10 years ago. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

J. August Richards: The first time I saw a Spike Lee movie was the first time I realized black characters don't have to apologize for being black.

While conventional wisdom would expect some form of world-threatening destruction in a superhero film, Black Panther wisely eschews the trappings of tropes for a deeper pondering unlike anything yet seen in this genre. "Meal prep! We gotta go pop this thing in the microwave and eat food.' It's tough to socialize when you gotta get in shape like that", the actor explained.

Aiding and abetting this risky ploy is Erik Killmonger (a beyond-charismatic Michael B. Jordan of Creed), an ex-US military agent who knows more than he is letting on about the mystical Wakandan way of life. The family is unique to Black Panther.

Perhaps the best summation of the potential of Black Panther can be comes from GQ's Olive Pometsey. I also would like to add that the focus on her being the smartest person in the universe is strong here, and many characters in the Marvel universe-including Tony Stark himself-have a lot to learn from Shuri's technology and skills. "I thought they just did a phenomenal job of introducing the main character from this film, casting Chadwick, casting Dr. John Kani and Florence Kasumba". Jordan, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o and Daniel Kaluuya, among many other acting favorites of ours, this might be one of the blackest movies ever; from director right down through the cast.

Black Panther opens in Australian cinemas on Wednesday February 14.
