SpaceX Launching Powerful Falcon Heavy Rocket ... And a Tesla Roadster!!!

Today is a big day for SpaceX. If you're not, you should be!

The vehicle will be driven by a space-suited dummy, dubbed by Musk as "Starman", and is set to play the soundtrack of David Bowie's "Life on Mars?" during the launch.

You know when it's just too windy to bother stepping outside?

SpaceX had originally expected the Falcon Heavy would send two paying tourists around the moon late this year. Up until recently, launching stuff into space was the government's job.

SpaceX, the company founded by Musk in 2002, will launch the rocket today with the intention of getting it into Mars's orbit. Upon liftoff, at precisely 3:45 PM Eastern, the Falcon Heavy rocket took its place as the most powerful launch vehicle in the world.

If all goes according to plan, SpaceX would be able to stake its claim on building the most powerful operational rocket in the world.

Falcon Heavy is essentially three regular Falcon 9 rocket boosters strapped together. The Falcon Heavy rocket aims for touching red planet Mars and moon, someday. This is a test launch, so, just for fun, Musk decided it would be cool to launch one his cars - a $100,000 Tesla Roadster from his personal collection.

On board the rocket that's now headed for orbit around the Earth is Musk's personal Tesla roadster. [The] destination is Mars orbit. It could remain in orbit for hundreds of millions of years.

But while SpaceX has promised to take two paying customers on a trip around the moon in the near future, its first missions will involve the usual cargo.

The rocket is equipped with three boosters and 27 engines created to provide more than 2 million kilograms of thrust. It could be a rocky ride. About $90 million dollars, according to CNN Money.

"For this test flight, Falcon Heavy's side cores are flight-proven - both previously supported independent Falcon 9 missions in 2016". The third booster was supposed to land on a sea-faring platform called a droneship, but it wasn't immediately clear if that landing was successful.

The flight was due to begin at 6.30pm United Kingdom time (1.30pm US EST), with a webcast starting 40 minutes before, but that has been put back to 8.45pm and the webcast, which you can watch via the video above, should now kick off soon.

The Falcon Heavy rocket rose Tuesday from the same Florida launch pad used by NASA almost 50 years ago to send men to the moon.
