Jeff Flake Attacks Trump Again - 'Flagrant Disregard For Truth And Decency'

One of President Donald Trump's loudest critics from within his own party took to the Senate floor on Tuesday afternoon to denounce his calling Democrats "treasonous" at an event in OH the prior evening. "But treason is not a punchline, Mr. President", he said.

Gidley told NBC News Trump was trying to get the message across that people should be happy about positive achievements in the country, regardless of their party affiliation.

During last Tuesday's address, the president touted his tax cuts and regulation rollbacks as the reason Americans are finally seeing more wages after "years and years" of stagnation. Others have reminded us that in Stalin's Soviet Union, refraining from applauding was in fact treasonous.

The U.S. Constitution, however, defines treason against the country as "only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort". "I mean they certainly didn't seem to love our country very much".

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Tuesday the President was "clearly joking" when he made the comment.

Flake didn't see it that way, and took to the Senate floor to ask, "Have we arrived at such a place of numb acceptance that we have nothing to say when a president of the United States casually suggests that those who choose not to stand or applaud his speech are guilty of treason?"

"But what isn't a joke is that Democrats refuse to celebrate the accomplishments of past year that has helped all Americans", she said.

Although Trump called for bipartisan unity during the address, many Democrats remained seated and avoided clapping even during points that typically would prompt a response.

"They Resist, Blame, Complain and Obstruct - and do nothing", Trump complained, adding: "We have a great chance to make a deal or, blame the Dems!" Trump said, complaining that Democrats "would rather see Trump do badly, OK, than our country do well".

Trump said he noticed one lawmaker who was "putting his hands together".

Trump compared the remark to Hillary Clinton calling his supporters "deplorable".
