Amazon's Prime Now can deliver groceries from Whole Foods

Whole Foods' private-label brand, Everyday Value 365, is already available on Prime Now delivery in some markets, including NY. For reference, Amazon acquired Whole Foods for almost $14 billion in 2017.

As part of the deal, Prime Now customers get free two-hour delivery of their shopping after spending more than $35. Austin, Cincinnati, Dallas and Virginia Beach residents can start shopping now, but the company plans to expand the service nationwide in the future.

Whole Foods has Upstate New York locations in Buffalo and Albany. Amazon's new service, called Prime Now, hopes to deliver on that promise while delivering organic produce from Whole Foods. Analysts said grocery delivery is a pricey business full of logistical and practical challenges. If you absolutely must have a certain product even sooner than that, you'll also be able to shell out an extra $8 (on top of a $35 order minimum) to get your order delivered within an hour.

During Amazon's earnings call last week, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said Prime is expected to be rolled out in Whole Foods stores possibly by the end of this year.

Since Amazon bought Whole Foods previous year, rival grocers have been working to increase delivery. It estimates as of January, Amazon had 18% of online grocery sales in the United States.

[Updated 2/8/18, 1:39 pm.] The race is on to sign up consumers seeking same-day delivery of groceries, household items, and personal goods.

This Whole Foods delivery test is not on the scale of typical Amazon deliveries.

The e-commerce giant just announced that it will begin offering free 2-hour Whole Foods deliveries for Prime members via its Prime Now service.

Neil Lindsay, VP of worldwide marketing at Amazon, will take on most of Greeley's former responsibilities at Prime, according to a source.

If Amazon cuts most product prices and leverages dynamic pricing across all channels, traditional grocers would be forced to change prices faster than they're used to. It'll include "the vast majority of things that people buy most frequently", Stephenie Landry, the vice president of Prime Now, told The Seattle Times.
