How Apple's HomePod compares to the competition

How Apple's HomePod compares to the competition

It's not uncommon for Apple products to sell out on the first day, so selling out almost 2 weeks later is a bit of a red flag but expected.

We've got all the details on where to buy the new gadget, which is a direct rival to the popular Amazon Echo and Google Home speakers.

APPLE'S HomePod smart speaker is now on sale in the United Kingdom, retailing at a hefty £319. Especially against current competitors that already provide great results, such as with the Google Home Max?

The Verge's Nilay Patel describes the HomePod as a "lonely" piece of technology, asking whether "beautiful sound quality [is] worth locking yourself even more tightly into a walled garden" of Apple's services. "Clearly, there are a lot of Siri devices out there, but they've barely been able to leverage Siri in the home environment, much less in business".

"I think Siri could be expanded". "Any speaker can blast music but the "HomePod puts music around the room".

"Siri on HomePod is embarrassingly inadequate, even though that is the primary way you interact with it", wrote Brian Chen in his review of HomePod for The New York Times.

"It won't work with Android at all", he added, noting that Amazon's and Google's devices can. More than 16% of iPhone users were strongly compelled to purchase an Echo device over a HomePod.

What does the HomePod do, then? The HomePod does have features the Amazon Echo and Google Home don't, such as the ability to play podcasts at a faster speed or use voice to send iMessages and WhatsApp texts, according to BuzzFeed's Nicole Nguyen. That said, we can't imagine those things will turn away the Apple diehards, who can use it to stream music, control smart home items, and ask Siri really important questions. That's because unlike Sonos products, the Homepod only natively integrates with Apple Music, and no third-party music service. Now that they've missed the chance of competing for sales during the holidays, overall interest in Apple's smart speaker may have continued to die down.
