The bottom line is that anything still running iOS 9 is already vulnerable (there have been loads of iOS security fixes released since iOS 9 support ended) so you're already skating on thin ice.
The codes in question pertain to the "iBoot" process of iOS. It turns on the iPhone and then loads the lock screen. It starts its process and verifies that the kernel is properly signed by Apple, at which point it executes the bootup process. The leak is so significant because of the importance of iBoot's role to the wider iOS platform.
But even if the code leak is not a security risk, the mere fact that it made its way into the outside world is something that Apple will be deeply concerned about.
However, Jonathan Levin, who wrote a series of books on iOS and Mac OSX internals, has described it as a "big deal" and the "biggest leak in history".
The version of iBoot posted appears to be from iOS 9, which means it may not have a huge impact on the current version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 11.
The development is extremely serious, as iBoot is a critical component of the iPad and iPhone's operating system. They may be easier to find now the iBoot source has been distributed.
He continued: "iBoot is the one component Apple has been holding on to, still encrypting its 64-bit image. now it's wide open in source code form".
Apple responded by filing a copyright takedown request with GitHub shortly after the breach, all but confirming that the leaked code was genuine.
Sky News has contacted Apple for a comment.
Apple has been particularly cautious about releasing code to the public: only certain parts of its operating system are open-source, and the company runs a bounty program which pays $200,000 to anyone who finds a bug in its programming.
Apple has acknowledged that source code used in the software of iPhones and iPads has been leaked online, which security experts warn could present a major opportunity for hackers. That's applies to this case in particular, since the leaked source code is said to contain documentation. Although the source was only available for a short time, it's likely that hundreds of people viewed and downloaded the material while it was available.
