Ex-Manchester United midfielder, Miller is dead

Former Ireland, Celtic and Manchester United midfielder Liam Miller has died after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Manchester United wrote in their tweet: "Manchester United is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of our former midfielder Liam Miller".

President Higgins says he contributed much to Ireland in his too-short life and he sends his condolences to family, friends and all those who love and support Irish sport, who will keenly feel his loss.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer past year and returned to Cork in November for treatment at Marymount.

Liam Miller was an "unassuming man off the pitch but a brilliant player on it", Celtic legend Pat Bonner said.

Celtic, the club where Miller began his career, won a league title and played 44 times, held a minute's silence before their game with Patrick Thistle on Saturday.

Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill gave Miller his debut during his time as Celtic manager where he rose to prominence particularly through his performances in Europe. Thoughts are with all his family and friends at this horrendous time.

Miller spent time in Australia and the United States and Brisbane Roar shared this memory, adding that there'd be a minute's silence before their game on Sunday.

The next move was back to Scotland where he signed for Hibernian, staying at Easter Road for two seasons before moving to Australia's A-League where he joined Perth Glory.

"Thanks for the memories, Liam!" tweeted Sunderland, while Leeds simply said: "Thank you Liam".

Tributes are flowing in for the player who represented 12 clubs, also including Celtic and Sunderland, over a 16-year professional football career.

Miller is survived by his wife Clare and his three children Kory, Leo and Belle. He went on to play for his national side for another five years and scored just once for the greens, a stunner in a 3-0 win over Sweden.

Rodgers revealed he learned of Miller's passing at the team hotel on Friday night as they prepared for yesterday's Cup tie.
