Joaquin Phoenix in talks to play Joker in Martin Scorsese's standalone film

Joaquin Phoenix in talks to play Joker in Martin Scorsese's standalone film

DC and Warner Bros. are ramping up production of the Joker standalone movie with Joaquin Phoenix most likely to play the role and will be directed by Todd Phillips who directed The Hangover.

Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is said to be attached as producer to the movie, which will lend inspiration from his films "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull", both of which are dark masterpieces, Comicbook.com reported.

According to reports, Joaquin Phoenix has already agreed to play the role of the Joker, but the talks just need to go through. WB has yet to comment and negotiations are not yet underway.

Insiders have revealed that Jared Leto's iteration of the famous villain, last seen in 2016's Suicide Squad, will continue to play out in other DC Comics projects, as Phoenix's film will have no effect on Leto's role whatsoever. Even Leonardo DiCaprio was rumored to have been the first person approached to star in Phillips' standalone film, but that clearly isn't the direction he's going with it. Sources are saying that Phillips" story will take place in the "80s and will take the form of a gritty crime drama, rather than your typical comic-book movie.

Phillips, who has also worked on Road Trip and War Dogs, will direct the movie and co-write it with Scott Silver.

These films are meant to "expand the canon of the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles that aren't included in its current cinematic universe", said Variety. Is he all talk?

Joaquin Phoenix is talented enough to produce a range of characters that go every which way but through his portrayal of the nefarious villain of Commodus in Gladiator, an intellectual savant and the guy that was loved to be hated we believe he is ideal for the role of The Joker.

Michael is a music and television junkie keen on most things that are not a complete and total bore.
