Kim Yo-jong meets South Korean president in Seoul as thaw continues

Kim Yo Jong and other North Korean delegates, including the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam, arrived in the South on Friday on Kim Jong Un's private jet and attended the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

North and South Korea have always been at odds, so when athletes from both nations walked under the same flag at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday the world paid attention.

Country representatives, including host country President President Moon Jae-in and U.S. Vice President Mike Pence are seen at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on February 9, 2018.

The ceremony was held at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium in South Korea's eastern county of PyeongChang. Members of a delegation from North Korea, part of an extraordinary Olympics partnership between the two Korean rivals, watched from high in the stadium a performance called "The Land of Peace".

Talk of combining teams was broached ahead of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul but did not happen.

And officials knew they had to do something when, in 2014, a Kenyan man headed to Pyeongchang for a United Nations conference ended up in Pyongyang instead.

In expressing the administration's displeasure, Pence went so far as to refuse to be seated for dinner at a pre-ceremony reception hosted by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The U.S. and its allies are not ruling out military action against North Korea, Vice President Mike Pence told NBC News.

North Korean dignitaries were present, including leader Kim Jong-un's sister, Kim Yo-jong.

But most, a source close to the prime minister's office said, feel that "dialogue is meaningless unless North Korea says it will abandon nuclear weapons in a verifiable and irreversible manner".

They said Pence could have opted to sit with the U.S. delegation and avoided the box that included the North Koreans. A White House official indicated that it was fair to cast the lack of interaction between Pence and the North Koreans in Moon's box as mutual.

Kim Yo-jong and her delegation were greeted by government officials, including Unification Minister Cho Myong-gyon, before boarding a bullet train to Pyeongchang.
