Trudeau makes pitch to Silicon Valley, Amazon to invest in Canada

Trudeau makes pitch to Silicon Valley, Amazon to invest in Canada

The speech was a centerpiece on his California swing in which he warned Canada won't be muscled into a trade deal that is unfavorable to his country, while promoting Canada as a destination for California technology firms uneasy with shifting US immigration policy.

A Canadian program allows businesses to get work permits for foreign workers in about two weeks.

Trudeau is due to give a speech in Chicago on Wednesday to sell the merits of bilateral trade. "My thanks to @GavinNewsom for a great discussion on how we can increase trade".

The overt reason for the meeting was to celebrate Salesforce's commitment to invest $2 billion in Canada over the next five years, building out its data centers and adding to its workforce there. He also met with Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos, who's considering locations for a second headquarters.

"NAFTA, while not ideal, has been good for the United States, broadly speaking, just as it has been good for Canada and Mexico, broadly speaking", Trudeau told a sold-out audience in an address on Canada-U.S. relations in the library's Air Force One Pavilion. Canadian PM pitches Canada tech jobs to San Francisco marketAmazon C.E.O.

"One thing that the Trudeau government is brilliant at is its messaging".

"It's the global epicenter for many of these revolutions".

"We are legitimately concerned about the future of NAFTA", the prime minister said in the appearance, which was recorded for Axelrod's Axe Files podcast.

Yesterday Justin Trudeau came to the University of Chicago on the first leg of his four-day American tour.

The remark caught the attention of media outlets outside Canada, including "Fox and Friends", which ridiculed Trudeau for the comment during a broadcast Tuesday.

Another major risk is NAFTA, with Trump regularly threatening to walk away if he doesn't get a bigger deal. The investment "will strengthen our economy and further position our country as a world leader in tech", Trudeau said.

Trudeau declined to talk about specifics, but said Canada wants an agreement that is "win-win-win" for all three countries.

The company would not say how many jobs it would create through the investment.

In his speech, Trudeau made repeated references to the historic connections between the two countries and argued that backing away from NAFTA could unspool deep ties across the continent - with an unknown cost.

California sells some $25.4 billion in goods and services to Canada, and nearly 1.2 million jobs in the state rely on trade, according to federal statistics.

"It's unfortunately not an area that is up for discussion". Lighthizer said there will be another round in Mexico in late February and that core issues are starting to be discussed. "Let's not raise fresh barriers between our peoples", Trudeau said at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.

"We really have a depth of relationship that isn't just about one visit".
