American Luger Emily Sweeney Walks Away From Terrifying Crash

American Luger Emily Sweeney Walks Away From Terrifying Crash

Sweeney hit the turn at over 60 miles per hour, trying to use her feet to slow down her descent, but to no avail.

There were concerns that she may have suffered leg or spinal injuries in the crash.

American luger Emily Sweeney was involved in a terrifying crash during her fourth run at the luge today, but was able to walk away virtually unscathed.

Sue Sweeney, centre, the mother of Emily Sweeney of the United States, cries out as her daughter crashes on the final run during the women's luge final. After falling onto the ice, Sweeney rolled down the track with her sled in tow before coming to a stop. She actually said she was okay at that point, and it was confirmed that she had no broken bones or anything of that nature, though she was then taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Upon exiting the course, she received a standing ovation from the other lugers and was even able to say, "I'm fine", which, if you weren't crying already, certainly sealed the deal. I'm going to get an X-ray on my back after this, but I wanted to have the last word. Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvilia died at just 21 years old in a luge crash as he practiced for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Sweeney gave a grimaced smile and a wave to a group of soldiers cheering her on as she walked the final steps to the ambulance.

Geisenberger won gold by maintaining the lead she took into the day.

Sweeney lost control around Curve 9, the track's most treacherous spot, and then began careening all over the track.

Later in the final run, Britcher lost control at the start and collided with a few walls - but got down the track without crashing or sustaining serious injury.

"I don't know. We'll see", she said.

The Associated Press contributed to this reported.
