Decision on Honda Classic depends on soreness, says Tiger Woods

Decision on Honda Classic depends on soreness, says Tiger Woods

The PGA Tour heads to the Riviera Country Club in California this weekend for the Genesis Open.

DJ chalked up losing to journeyman Ted Potter Jr.by three shots as "just one of those days" when things weren't going his way. "Be able to go at it full bore again", Woods said. The 2018 Genesis Open will be Woods' first tournament at Riviera Country Club since 2006.

He went on to pile up 79 USA tour titles and 14 major championships, but in 10 appearances at Riviera his best finish was second place in 1998, which he followed with a tie for second in 1999.

Last year Johnson waltzed home after leading by five after 54 holes.

His scheduled return in 2017 was foiled by yet more back trouble.

During his Tuesday press conference, Woods was peppered with questions about his back and what he wants to accomplish as he gets back in the swing of competing in tournaments.

He's now playing without pain after spinal fusion surgery in April.

Woods is too driven to win, too impatient by nature to be satisfied with mediocre results for too long - especially at age 42 while trying to catch up to the likes of Johnson, Thomas, Spieth, McIlroy, et al. I'll also point out that Tom Doak has done plenty of work at Augusta National over the years so that connection could have validity. "A lot of the holes, you hit nice soft cuts and I used to love to hit nice soft cuts, and for some reason I just didn't play well".

Woods will be paired for the first two rounds of the Genesis Open with Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas, who flew to the event with Woods. In the midst of his latest comeback, Woods, whose charitable foundation is tied to the event, is coming off a promising tie for 23rd at Torrey Pines.

"I love the golf course, I love the layout, it fits my eye but I play it awfully", he said.

During that time away, when even Woods wasn't sure about his future in golf, he became more accessible to players.

Nevertheless, there was an echo of the fiery competitor who once seemed certain to eclipse Jack Nicklaus's record of 18 major titles when Woods talked about contending with today's rising stars.

"It'd be a great sign if I do play", Woods told reporters at Riviera, "And I think it'd be a smart sign if I don't play".

"Once I get into contention I can handle myself", he said. But to shoot 3-under par for the tournament based on his errant driving was a testament to how good Woods' short game was that week. Comfort with success - I'd say that's a recipe for holding a trophy again.

"I'm sorry, but that put things in perspective really fast". I'm just a person that they could bounce ideas off of - what did I used to do and how do I feel these things, what do I do in certain situations, certain shots.
