Google Found a Way to Bring Smart Replies to All Messaging Apps

The app analyzes the text of conversation then generate a contextual response with three suggested replies for the user selection. That means Reply won't come in the form of a standalone app like, say, Google Duo, but merely a feature baked into a variety of chat apps.

Google's new experimental project called Reply is able to bring automated Smart Replies to popular messaging apps.

Google's experimental product lab called Area 120 is now testing a new system simply called Reply that will work with Google's Hangouts and Allo, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Android Messages, Skype, Twitter direct messages and Slack.

Once released, it is likely that developers will need to incorporate the coding into their apps for it to work.

Reply is now available to some testers who previously signed up to Area 120's Early Access Program. And you want to be there for people, but also for people in the real world. "What if replying was literally one tap away?" Reply could notify you, even if your phone is silent.

Vacation responder. Reply can check your calendar and tell people if you're not working.

The replies take into consideration the user's current location to help with crafting the correct response - like a "yes" or "no" if you've arrived somewhere, or the time it will take you to drive to a given location, for example. Last month, Google announced the addition of Smart Reply within Messages for those users on its mobile phone service, Project Fi. Also, when a user gets an urgent message, Reply will ensure that the notification gets the user's attention even if their phone is silent. Smart replies can be shown directly in the message's notification for an instant response. This is a nifty feature that uses AI to scan the contents of your email, and based on that it will provide users with a bunch of different reply options that are appropriate to the email.

AI systems rely on artificial neural networks (ANNs), which try to simulate the way the brain works in order to learn. This is particularly useful when you receive an inquiry about arrival time.

A new breed of ANNs called Adversarial Neural Networks pits the wits of two AI bots against each other, which allows them to learn from each other.
