New York City Bomber Is Sentenced To Life In Prison

New York City Bomber Is Sentenced To Life In Prison

The 30-year-old terrorist delivered a rambling and remorseless diatribe before Manhattan Federal Court Judge Richard Berman slapped him with two life terms plus 30 years.

U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman in Manhattan said it was hard to reconcile the "reasonable enough" man he saw in court with the terrorist who tried to kill as many people as he could when he left his home early the morning of September 17, 2016, with two pressure-cooker explosives and a bag full of smaller bombs.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi, a naturalized US citizen born in Afghanistan, was convicted in October in connection to an explosive device that detonated in a dumpster in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood, injuring 30, as well as another bomb placed nearby that did not detonate.

Ahmad Rahimi reads a statement to the judge during his sentencing hearing in NY on Tuesday.

He described how his father went to law enforcement on multiple occasions to report suspicious behavior he had seen in his son, but ultimately felt let down.

Rahimi, 30, did not express remorse for his crime, the BBC reported, but told the court he did not "harbor hate for anyone".

Ahmad Khan Rahimi, center, is led into court in Elizabeth, N.J. on December 20.

"The explosion propelled a more-than-100-pound dumpster - which was introduced as an exhibit at trial - more than 120 feet". The other bomb, four blocks north, was discovered and rendered safe before it could explode. Earlier that day, he had placed a bomb in a garbage can at the finish line of a US Marine Corps charity race in Seaside Park, N.J. The race's start time had been delayed, however, and no one was hurt when the bomb exploded.

Rahimi was arrested and charged after a pressure cooker bomb went off in New York's Chelsea neighborhood the night of September 17, 2016.

Authorities shut down the station, evacuated the terminal and briefly suspended service in and out of Elizabeth.

"You laugh with your lawyer". "You might have grievances, and they might be genuine, but there's no comparison between those slights or grievances you might have and the acts you undertook as the Chelsea bomber". "You have no remorse for what you did".

He was convicted of charges including the use and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, bombing a public place, destroying property by means of fire or explosives, and using a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence - namely, the use and attempted use of weapons of mass destruction.

The verdict resulted in a mandatory life sentence.

In recent court papers, prosecutors painted Rahimi as a remorseless terrorist who was basking in his newfound infamy.

Rahimi was born in Afghanistan.

"I'm an immigrant like you", she told him.

Rahimi even laughed during the conversation, prosecutors claimed.
