Russian mercenaries killed by USA troops in Syria gun battle

Russian mercenaries killed by USA troops in Syria gun battle

A senior lawmaker says the Russian parliament is working on a bill to regulate private military companies, amid reports about an unknown number of Russian military contractors killed in a us strike in Syria. Russian and Syrian officials ha d estimated that dozens of Russians had been killed, The New York Times reported.

The strike on the T-72 tank occurred on Saturday near Al Tabiyeh, in Deir Ezzor province, the Pentagon said in a statement.

Briefing reporters by video at the Pentagon, Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, who heads Air Forces Central Command, said "deconfliction" conversations between the USA and Russian militaries in Syria continued on a daily basis. Russian liberal presidential candidate Grigory Yavlinsky was one of many voices urging the Kremlin to come clean on the affair. The reports cited activists who said that at least four Russian citizens were killed in Syria on February 7.

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis played down the incident, saying: "This could just be a local couple of guys doing something".

The Russian Defence Ministry has said that none of its soldiers were in the area and suggested that pro-Syrian government fighters may have failed to coordinate their actions with the Russian military. The New York Times cited a Syrian military officer as saying about 100 Russian soldiers had been killed.

Briefing reporters by video at the Pentagon, Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, who heads Air Forces Central Command, said that "deconfliction" conversations between the USA and Russian militaries in Syria continued on a daily basis.

"Let's be frank: There are rather large numbers of our Russian countrymen in many countries of the world, and it is very hard in this case to possess detailed information", Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Tuesday in response to a question about the Russian deaths. The U.S. official put the death toll in the fighting at about 100, with 200 to 300 injured, but was unable to say how many were Russians.

Twitter posts announcing the deaths were found by the Conflict Intelligence Team. Some 2,000 United States forces remain on the ground in Syria, allied to the Kurdish-led SDF alliance, which holds the largest swath of territory still outside the control of the government. US officials also said the Russian government had lodged no complaint about its citizens being killed. However, many Russian citizens are fighting in Syria as mercenaries working for a private military company called Wagner, according to numerous reports.

For more than three hours, American F-15E attack planes, B-52 strategic bombers, AC-130 gunships, Apache attack helicopters and Reaper drones fired on the attacking ground force, which Harrigian said was advancing under covering fire from artillery, mortars, rockets and tank rounds. "More than 200 is the current estimate, we can not know the exact number yet, but a lot of them were Russian", he said in a telephone interview. In December previous year, President Vladimir Putin ordered the partial retreat of Russian troops from Syria.

"Coalition officials were in regular communication with the Russian counterparts before, during and after the thwarted, unprovoked attack", Veale said.

"I'm sure the number of those confirmed dead is going to increase", said Alexander Ionov, a Russian anti-globalization activist who has fought in Syria and is well-connected among former fighters from eastern Ukraine.
