Sky Sports Wins Premier League TV Rights

BT Group (LON:BT.A) and Sky (LON:SKY) will pay less for Premier League matches, having snapped up the rights to the majority of live games for £4.46 billion.

Media speculation is growing with regards to the Premier League's remaining broadcast packages, with U.S. tech giants Amazon, Facebook and Apple reported to be considering lucrative bids to strengthen their United Kingdom product propositions through football content.

There are still two broadcast rights packages available with a number of interested bidders.

The London market was on the rise this morning as Sky and BT climbed higher after keeping hold of Premier League television rights.

Sky have committed to pay £3.579bn in total to show 128 live games per season - two matches more than they do at present.

Sky and BT have each renewed their Premier League rights, with the former taking four and the latter one of the live rights packages for a total of £4.46 billion (US$6.18 billion), with Amazon seemingly not in the running.

Under the deal, BT is supplying its sports channels, which show UEFA Champions League and Premier League football, to Sky. The Times noted in its coverage of the news that the price paid for the five packages totalling 160 matches is just under £700 million short of the £5.136 billion total achieved three years ago for 168 games.

The deals maintain the Premier League as by far the world's richest football league, with the overseas rights sales still to be concluded.

With 40 more games a season still to be sold, the cost-per-game price is £9.3m, down from the current £10.2m.

"Securing more games at a lower cost is a major coup, and with BT seemingly content to play second fiddle on the Premier League, that rivalry now looks to have thawed".

The deal will permit Sky to broadcast games on Fridays, Saturday tea-time, Sundays and Mondays.

Two packages to show 20 midweek matches are still to be sold, but experts say it is unlikely they will raise enough to top the previous rights deal.

The sudden ferocity of competition between Sky and BT Sport which boosted the Premier League clubs' coffers for the 2016-19 cycle has calmed a little after the two companies signed a deal in December which enables each to offer the other's channels on their platform.

"Despite more games being available, the Premier League has failed to maximise its prized asset".

Sky's United Kingdom chief executive Stephen van Rooyen was also pleased with the deal, with the company spending 16% less per game than in its current package.
