THQ Nordic Buys Saints Row, Metro, Dead Island Owner, Koch Media

THQ Nordic Buys Saints Row, Metro, Dead Island Owner, Koch Media

THQ Nordic's purchase will bring in house all of Koch Media's studios, intellectual properties, and licenses.

The original THQ as we knew it declared bankruptcy and liquidated pretty much all its assets in 2013.

THQ Nordic has bought Koch Media in a deal worth 121 million euro.

In a press release, THQ Nordic explained that it has no plans now to restructure Deep Silver, which likely means that various studio jobs are safe. Deep Silver also partially funded and published Mighty No. 9.

In the THQ Nordic press release on the acquisition, it is stated that while Deep Silver has had some less successful game releases, it has still maintained a long history of profitability.

Another interesting tidbit from the official press release is that THQ Nordic mentions that Saints Row and Agents of Mayhem developer Volition, acquired by Deep Silver in 2013, is now working on an unannounced AAA game.

KitGuru Says: Deep Silver has had a rough time recently. In May 2017, Deep Silver told Eurogamer Dead Island 2 was still alive, despite no news emerging on the game in over a year.

"I strongly believe that THQ Nordic is a great strategic fit with Koch Media".

Koch Media's gaming division Deep Silver is responsible for publishing and co-publishing titles such as Dead Island, Homefront, Kingdom Come Deliverance, and the Metro series.

THQ Nordic said it will "closely monitor and delegate resources" to Koch's games business "in order to ensure quality and a healthy return on investment on its large in-house development projects".

It also means that certain franchises now have the potential to be reunited with their developer - for instance, THQ Nordic now owns both the rights to Red Faction, and Red Faction: Guerrilla developer Volition.

Years ago, THQ was one of the biggest publishers and developers in the video game industry.
