Warrant: Man in fatal shooting might have targeted YouTube stars

The duo were forced to call Austin Police from the enclosed space after the man, identified as New Mexico local Christopher Giles, fired at least one round in their home in the early hours of Monday morning (local time).

A disgruntled man drove to Austin to confront Gavin Free and Megan Turney, a young YouTube couple.

Austin police say Giles fired both inside and outside the house, and when he fired at police, Officer Matthew Jackson returned fire.

Throughout the investigation, Austin Police Department detectives found chilling evidence about what Giles might have been up to. He died from gunshot wounds, police said. The warrant says his fatal gunshot wound might have been self-inflicted, based on preliminary findings from the Travis County medical examiner's office.

It was reported that Giles had "developed a fondness" for Ms Turney, but disliked her boyfriend Mr Free.

Police later found cell phone recordings made by Giles in which he made clear his obsession with Meg and hatred of her boyfriend.

She said the intruder broke into the home through the back door and was walking around while the couple hid in the master bedroom closet. "Based on the footage seen, it was apparent that Giles' sole intent was to cause harm to someone who resides there", police documented in a search warrant.

A search of Giles's home led to further evidence of his lonely, isolated existence, most of which was spent playing video-games and watching YouTube videos related to the same.

"Threatening thoughts were recorded by Giles and directed toward Gavin Free, i.e., 'I want Gavin Free to die alone, with no children, ' " wrote a detective handling the case. Giles was pronounced dead at the scene with a.45 caliber handgun by his side.

The victims are stars on social media who have amassed millions of followers on both YouTube and Instagram through a series of slow-motion videos. "It's been a rough time for Meg and myself the last few weeks but we are doing ok. I want to give a huge thanks to Austin police for the unbelievable response time".

Meg also thanks the Austin Police "for their quick response" and "ongoing support during this hard time".
