Giants Hiring Mike Shula As Offensive Coordinator

Giants Hiring Mike Shula As Offensive Coordinator

The New York Giants have hired Mike Shula as offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. Shurmur, most recently the Minnesota Vikings' offensive coordinator, has said he will be handling that role.

Two potential candidates have a connection to general manager Dave Gettleman from his days with the Carolina Panthers: Mike Shula and Ken Dorsey.

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula talks with tight end Ed Dickson during training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., on August 12, 2017. New Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey was also in Carolina with Gettleman.

Yet, once Stefasnki was denied permission to interview with the Giants, and with the expectation of the Eagles doing the same with Staley, Big Blue needed to find other solutions, which they have done in the hiring of Shula. Shula's background gave Shurmur that assurance. After that he worked for three years as a quarterbacks coach for the Jaguars before landing with the Panthers.

Staley knows Shurmur from his time with the Eagles both as a player and a coach.

Shula was sacked by the Panthers at the end of the 2017 season and was in Carolina during Dave Gettleman's entire stay as general manager. Otherwise, Carolina's offense was middle of the pack under Shula. The Panthers finished 19th in total offense (323.7 yards per game) and 28th in passing (192.3) during the past regular season. His stock was pretty high after Case Keenum's 14-win season, and soared in NY once Shurmur was hired.

Shula, 52, is the son of Don Shula, the NFL's all-time winningest coach. The elder Shula holds the National Football League record for regular season wins and he won two Super Bowls. At the NFL Honors on February 3 where he was named 2017 Assistant Coach of the Year, Shurmur was asked about the offensive coordinator opening.

Shula was Alabama's starting quarterback during the 1984 through 1986 seasons, and he returned to coach the Crimson Tide from 2003 through 2006.

Shula posted a 26-23 record in four seasons at Alabama before getting fired.
