Grand Canyon Helicopter Crash Leaves 3 Dead, 4 Injured Featured font size +

Three British tourists who were killed when a helicopter crashed in the Grand Canyon have been named by USA police.

The four survivors, including the pilot were airlifted to Nevada Hospital at about 2am Sunday, and remain in serious to critical conditions.

Bradley said there were four level 1 trauma patients at the scene of the crash near Quartermaster Canyon, within the Grand Canyon on the Hualapai Nation.

Unlike the national park, air tours on the Hualapai reservation are not subject to federal regulations that restrict routes, impose curfews and cap the amount of flights over the Grand Canyon each year.

The official cause of the crash was "the pilot's loss of control of the helicopter for undetermined reasons", the NTSB report states.

The aircraft came down around 5.20pm local time on Saturday (10 February) at the tourist attraction in the U.S. state of Arizona, although there is no information as to what caused the crash.

"We are in the recovery and investigation mode now", Bradley said. "It is with extreme sadness we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families involved in this accident", said Papillon Group chief executive Brenda Halvorson.

Teddy Fujimoto captured video shortly after the helicopter went down. That is about 60 miles west of Peach Springs, near the Grand Canyon's West Rim.

The helicopter - owned by Papillon Airways, a sightseeing company that specializes in helicopter tours of the canyon - suffered "sustained substantial damage" in the accident.

The National Weather Service estimates wind conditions were about 16 kilometres per hour with gusts of 32 kilometres per hour when the helicopter crashed.

In a statement, Bradley expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the crash victims. The Federal Aviation Administration would also be investigating the crash of the Eurocopter EC130, spokesman Allen Kenitzer said.

Then a pilot and five tourists from NY were killed, one woman survived.
