Malaysian newspaper criticized for publishing biased traits of LGBT individuals

Malaysian newspaper criticized for publishing biased traits of LGBT individuals

"That's what you're going to do, and if that's what you're happy doing because you want less gay people in this country, good job to you".

It's nearly incredible. the paper published a guide on how to spot gays and lesbians. It suggested people concerned about gay people should look out for people who "adopt" others as their brothers or sisters, and said gay men's "eye's light up" when a handsome man is around.

And if you're anxious about likely lesbians, make sure to keep an eye out for women "that tend to hug each other, hold hands, and belittle men". The Sinar Harian article was accompanied by an interview with Hanafiah Malik, a preacher who warned homosexuality was on the increase in Malaysia and said there was an urgent need to stop the trend.

The movie flap came years after Malaysian censors revised restrictions on religious and sexual content in movies but, the AP said, still promoted a negative view of LGBT people.

Also last year, an 18-year-old student was beaten and burned to death by classmates who labeled him a "pondan", or gay man, according to the Irish Times.

Movie chains in the country, for example, halted the release of "Beauty and the Beast" because of a "gay moment" in the film, The Associated Press reported.

The article in Sinar Harian featured bullet points of supposedly distinctive qualities that revealed LGBT people.

Commenting on the article by the newspaper, Arwind Kumar, a YouTube star and activist, said, "I'm not sure who wrote this article, but to you, my dear friend, don't try to be God". A few months later, a 27-year-old transgender woman was stabbed and shot inside her florist shop. "There are much more important issues in this country that need to be addressed".

A Malaysian health ministry youth video competition also called for entries on the topic of the prevention and consequences of being gay, lesbian or transgender. How the hell does a gay person endanger your life?'

The official religion of Malaysia is Islam.
