Paul King In Talks To Direct New 'Willy Wonka' Movie

Paul King In Talks To Direct New 'Willy Wonka' Movie

King has a lot of buzz to his name, especially after Paddington 2 blew away critics and did well at the box office. Stop laughing - I'm not kidding. At present, the second Paddington film has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 88% on Metacritic. The feat bested the previous record held by Toy Story 2.

Warner will apparently place the project in some reliable hands with producer David Heyman, whose work speaks for itself, since it happens to include all the films of the Harry Potter franchise, including the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movies, as well as the Oscar-winning 2013 space drama Gravity.

Paul King, the director of the whimsical and acclaimed Paddington movies, has set his sights on another British literary title to adapt. The report states that Warner Bros. hopes the franchise will be an artistic standout under King's direction. However, it wouldn't be a retread of what we've seen before. Such an idea leaves the project open to interpretation, either focusing on the early life of Willy Wonka or, perhaps, simply on his rise to prominence in becoming a kingpin of candy.

The question is, do we need another Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie? On one hand, another reboot of the Willy Wonka story seems excessive, especially since no one is ever going to come close to Gene Wilder's performance. A 2005 adaptation was more faithful, bringing Johnny Depp into the lead role.

Roald Dahl's works are timeless classics and arguably his greatest character is Willy Wonka, the unusual and reclusive chocolatier. King is now one of the most in-demand directors for children's films, as both Paddington and Paddington 2 became critical and box office successes upon arrival.
