Southwest Resumes Chicago Flights After De-Icing Fluid Shortage

Southwest Resumes Chicago Flights After De-Icing Fluid Shortage

Passengers and crew members onboard the Boeing 737 at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, Southern California, were told to disembark using the aircraft's front emergency slides just after the plane had pushed back from the gate.

More than 250 cancellations occurred at the airport, with most being Southwest flights. The incident was first reported around 7:30 p.m.

After a weekend of heavy snow in Chicago, Southwest Airlines ran out of de-icing fluid at Midway Airport and cancelled more than 220 flights from the airport on Sunday. A few minor injuries were reported, but none requiring a hospital transport. While a supply of the de-icing liquid arrived early Monday, a "handful of flights" may still be canceled, she said. Orange County fire officials said the decision to evacuate the aircraft was made out of an abundance of caution.

According to the airport's Twitter account, the fire, which was apparently in the auxiliary power unit, has already been extinguished, while operations are "back to normal".

In a statement, Alyssa Eliasen, a spokesperson for the airline, said Southwest had "actively worked to manage our glycol levels (used to deice aircraft)", but that due to the severity of the winter weather it was forced to cancel the flights.
