Mikaela Shiffrin Dominates Second Giant Slalom Run, Takes Home Gold

Mikaela Shiffrin Dominates Second Giant Slalom Run, Takes Home Gold

"Normally on race day it's not easy for me to do that", she admitted to USA Today.

Instead, Shiffrin spent the time with her family and boyfriend, French Olympic skier Mathieu Faivre.

Mikaela Shiffrin entered the Winter Olympics as one of the biggest stars and perhaps the most dominant Alpine skier in the world.

It was Shiffrin's second career Olympic gold medal, following her slalom title at the 2014 Sochi Games when she was known as a slalom phenom.

Back in 2010, Mikaela Shiffrin had high hopes.

It's the third time in four days an Alpine skiing race was shelved because gusts made it too risky for competition.

Weather has played a major part. She may have also been thrown off by winning gold in the giant slalom on Thursday.

American skier Mikaela Shiffrin won the gold medal in the women's giant slalom event Thursday at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea. "It nearly felt like a virus", Shiffrin said, laughing.

On her first pass through the course, Shiffrin described the snow as "chattery" in the middle section, meaning she - along with everyone else - was in for a bumpy ride. I was two-tenths off of the podium. "And today is no different than that", she said.

Shiffrin, who confirmed she would skip the super-G, added: "I don't really have any particular excuses". The last Swiss to claim an Olympic medal in women's slalom was Schneider with her win in 1994.

"I'm kind of speechless", she said. "We have a great gym and space to eat and take plenty of naps, so I'll use this time to recharge".

Shiffrin, who initially complained of virus-like symptoms and was sick at the start gate before a disappointing first leg, was 0.40sec off the pace and will miss Saturday's super-G.

Shiffrin was widely expected to cruise to victory in the event, but she found herself facing a sizable time deficit after her first run.

"There is not much tactic that goes into it", she said. "She's just like - she's unbelievable", said Emmy Cobb of Peacham. "There are moments when I think "Oh my gosh, what am I going to do?', and there are other moments where I feel like, "No problem".

"Moving forward? I am awful at that. It's nice. For me, that's one of my favorite times during a race day is when I can like lie down and take a deep breath and get ready for the next run".

There's also a medal tonight in cross-country skiing, for the ladies' 10km freestyle.

"It's definitely been a mental strain the last couple of days - thinking we were going to race and then not racing", said Shiffrin. Even anywhere close to what I was doing with my free skiing.
