SC boy's Snapchat video stokes school fears in Florida

SC boy's Snapchat video stokes school fears in Florida

In the video, the boy is wearing a partial mask and is holding an apparent assault rifle.

Officials at Broome High School received an anonymous tip from a student about a possible threat, Spartanburg School District Three spokeswoman Sherri Horton said.

The minor, whose name can not be revealed due to his age, was charged with disturbing schools, and was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice facility in Greenville.

The suspect said that the message was planned to be a joke.

According to a FOX Carolina report, a school district spokesperson said a Broome High School ninth-grade student was arrested by the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Officeimmediately after the warning was made on the photo sharing app. The weapon was found to be a pellet gun, and deputies stated the suspect did not have access to any actual firearms.

School officials also recognized the student who tipped off authorities about the threat. "It is this kind of courage to speak out that can and will prevent tragedies", District 3 Superintendent Kenny Blackwood said in a statement.

A SC high school student was arrested Thursday after allegedly posting "Florida Round 2" on Snapchat- an obvious reference to Wednesday's school schooting-but insisted that the post was simply a "joke".

The Broward Sheriff's Office warned would-be copycats, "Remember, any posts that appear to be threatening in nature or are of a concern to a user should be brought to the attention of law enforcement who will monitor and investigate the validity and attempt to identify the source".

The shooting at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School took place on February 14. According to the timing of the message, it came just hours after the school shooting in Parkland. His public defender said that the teen was sad and remorseful.

The boy in the video is in custody and has no ties to the Southwest Florida school, deputies said.
