South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed a "new dawn" for the country Friday and promised to fight corruption following the resignation of his predecessor, Jacob Zuma, who was plagued by corruption scandals.

The aim of the council would be to ensure greater coherence and consistency in the implementation of economic policy and to ensure that government is better equipped to respond to changing economic circumstances.
"We will be initiating measures to set the country on a new path of growth, employment and transformation", he said, giving few policy details.
Speaking after his election, Ramaphosa said "South Africa must come first in everything that we all do".
The charismatic Mr. Zuma, a former African National Congress (ANC) militant who spent a decade imprisoned with Nelson Mandela, moved his party notably to the left.
Noting the celebrations by the ruling party legislators after days of national anxiety over whether or when Zuma would resign, the robed chief justice said: "I'm trying to adapt to the environment".
Opposition parties say Ramaphosa is a man they can work with, but they want action from him.
The COSATU trade union federation, an ANC ally, called on Ramaphosa to cut back the executive and crack down on government excess.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)'s Narend Singh hopes Ramaphosa will address the issues surrounding higher education in South Africa.
The president has also set his sights on the South African Revenue Service (Sars), which experienced a decrease in the amount of tax it collected previous year.
"It is time to remove the barriers to renewable energy, which can enable the achievement of universal access to energy and power disadvantaged communities much faster and at a cost South Africans can afford". Zuma denies all wrongdoing.
"The leadership change creates an opportunity for South Africa to return to its position as a democratic leader both in the region and globally, reversing its recent disengagement with the worldwide community on issues of human rights, democracy and governance", Temin said.
