Arrests made as Hawks raid the Guptas

Arrests made as Hawks raid the Guptas

The declaration comes after Ajay failed to hand himself over to the police.

Authorities at the OR Thambo International airport also told Eye Witness that their records show that Gupta left South Africa on a Dubai-bound Emirates flight 10 days ago.

Ajay Gupta was declared "a fugitive from justice" by South Africa's chief prosecutor earlier this week.

"Operations are still ongoing and further details will be made available at a later stage", Mulaudzi said.

The suspects face charges of fraud, money laundering and corruption, he added.

Duduzane is a director of one of the Guptas' companies, Westdawn Investments, which also allegedly siphoned funds from the farm project.

A high court had in January ordered the freezing of all assets linked to the farm.

Howa‚ Gupta‚ Chawla‚ Vasrum and Gupta were released on R200‚000 bail each while Thebetha‚ Masiteng and Dlamini were each released on R10‚000 bail.

The case of the eighth accused, the dairy farm's director, was postponed to February 19, while the entire case is scheduled to be heard on August 17.

As a dramatic raid is carried out on the Gupta family's Saxonwold compound, City Press has learnt of the imminent arrest of at least two Gupta brothers as well as Duduzane Zuma.

Eyewitnesses said that police sealed off the area around the Gupta home and led several people out from the interior.

Hawks spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said the raid was part of an investigation into allegations of influence peddling in the government.

According to the statement, the Hawks, assisted by the National Intervention Unit of the South African Police Service effected the arrests on some of the implicated suspects while others handed themselves in.

Ajay‚ the patriarch of the embattled Gupta family‚ is "on the run" and surrounded by a team of heavily armed bodyguards, Times Live reported.

Business Day understands that Atul Gupta's lawyer has been contacted by phone and SMS and told to ensure his client hands himself over.

"I am not aware of their whereabouts now", the report quoted their cousin Pradip Agarwal as saying.
