Canada dealt 1st Olympic loss since 2010

Canada dealt 1st Olympic loss since 2010

The goalie Pavel Francouz has closed the door in a shootout and the Czech Republic defeated Canada 3-2 on Saturday, during the tournament, the olympic men's hockey Games in Pyeongchang.

"The first 10 minutes I thought they had a little bit of an advantage but from that point on I thought we played hard", Canada coach Willie Desjardins said. "It was the game we expected", he said. "We just couldn't find a way to get one in". We know we have to get better.

Mason Raymond and Rene Bourque scored first-period goals for Canada, but Dominik Kubalik and Michal Jordan answered for the Czechs, who used a successful forecheck. Scrivens stopped a shot by Michal Birner, but Jordan grabbed the back before pushing it into the net.

"I thought it was going in, I must've pushed it wide or there was snow, but we don't have time to dwell on that", Noreau said of his shot. "Another one where they break in, throw it in the middle and hope for bounces, and they get one".

Canada has a much more aggressive style of play that will put the Czech Republic on the defensive from the start.

Dalton made 38 saves to keep it close for his team, and the crowd provided a big lift, roaring every time a Korean player carried the puck across center ice into the Czech zone.

Lacking a generational talent with the National Hockey League passing on Pyeongchang, Desjardins led off with fourth-line winger Maxim Lapierre, followed with Wojtek Wolski, Derek Roy and Mason Raymond and closed with defenceman Maxim Noreau, who beat Pavel Francouz but not the post, ending a run of 11 straight Olympic wins for Canada.

The Czech Petr Koukal and Jan Kouvar the other hand, have deceived the vigilance of Ben Scrivens in the shootout.

"A penalty shot is 50-50", said Czech forward Roman Cervenka. "We were more lucky today".

The three group winners and the best second-ranked team advance directly to the quarterfinals. The eight remaining teams cross the iron and the four nations of the victorious will go the quarter-finals.

The new-look Canadians will try to ride that momentum into Friday night's contest, when they battle the Czech Republic for the top spot in Group A. They played the Czechs 2-1.

The game is responsible for the question: How the heck do you bench Wayne Gretzky in a shootout?
