Florida Shooter Possibly Linked To White Supremacist Group

Florida Shooter Possibly Linked To White Supremacist Group

The FBI had a tip that Nikolas Cruz owned guns, wanted to kill people, and could be a future school shooter more than a month before Cruz killed 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida, on Wednesday. On January 5, a caller gave information about Cruz's gun ownership and reported that he had a desire to kill people, and pointed to the potential of him conducting a school shooting.

The stunning admission by the top U.S. law enforcement agency came two days after Cruz, a 19-year-old with a long history of troubling behavior, killed 17 people at his former high school in Parkland, Florida.

Under FBI protocols, that information should have been assessed as a potential threat to life and forwarded to its Miami field office for further investigation.

Broward State Attorney Mike Satz said Saturday that now is not the time to discuss whether his office would seek the death penalty or make a plea deal for Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old accused of shooting and killing 17 people at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Wednesday.

The FBI received information on January 5 about Florida school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz and his "desire to kill people", but the information was never forwarded for investigation, the bureau confirmed.

Israel's announcement came as the Federal Bureau of Investigation admitted it failed to properly notify a Miami field office of a warning from someone close to Cruz.

Special Agent Rob Lasky, in charge of the FBI's Miami division, said the agency investigated the comment, but said it could not identify the user who made the comment.

Questions are also being asked about how local police responded to concern about Nikolas Cruz.

It was the same type of firearm that's been used in many mass shootings, including in Las Vegas past year, Orlando in 2016 and at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012.

President Trump did not address the controversy during a trip to Florida on Friday to meet with two of the victims of the shootings, a boy and a girl, and with first responders.

He is aware that lots of people say outlandish things on the Internet, but it was the thought of someone shooting up a school that really alarmed him.

Satz did not elaborate as to when the appropriate time may be, but said that "now is the time to let the families grieve and bury their children and loved ones".

In addition to exchanging racist posts, memes and videos with five others, Cruz detailed how he wanted to kill Mexicans, shoot gay people "in the back of the head", and keep black people in chains and cut them in the neck.

The fire alarm went off inside the school.

The 17-year-old turned to the camera and said: "Please, take action".

Law enforcement have said they have found no evidence of a connection between Cruz and any white supremacist group.

On Friday, Trump met with medical staff and some victims at Broward Health North Hospital and also stopped at the Broward sheriff's office.

In South Carolina, a teen was arrested after a photo of him masked and holding up a rifle was reported to law enforcement.
