Oxfam Faces Crisis of Confidence Following Misconduct Allegations

Oxfam Faces Crisis of Confidence Following Misconduct Allegations

The deputy head of Oxfam resigned on Monday over what she said was the British charity's failure to adequately respond to past allegations of sexual misconduct by some of its staff in Haiti and Chad.

Since the revelations were first reported in The Times last week, Oxfam has lost two high-profile ambassadors, the actor Minnie Driver and Nobel Peace Prize victor Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

An Oxfam sign is seen on a kiosk that was used to distribute water in Corail, a camp for displaced people of the 2010 natural disaster, on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, February 13, 2018.

CAFOD dismissed the staffer on February 14, after Oxfam confirmed the employee was accused of sexual misconduct, according to the BBC. "Devastated for the women who were used by people sent there to help them, devastated by the response of an organisation that I have been raising awareness for since I was 9 years old #oxfamscandal".

Oxfam will triple funding to address safeguarding processes, while also doubling the number of staff in this area and increasing investment in gender training.

A new, independent High-Level Commission on Sexual Misconduct, Accountability, and Culture Change, comprised of leading women's rights experts, which will be able to access Oxfam records and interview staff, partners and communities it supports around the world.

"Government funding should stop immediately", she said. Allegations of "bullying, harassment, intimidation of Haitian and worldwide staff and serious sexual misconduct" were also levelled at Oxfam staff.

He also disclosed that one of the men sacked after being accused of using prostitutes was given a job reference from the charity, but it was written by a colleague who was too fired over the allegations.

Staffordshire residents have been left questioning their views on donating and giving to other charities in the future, after the recent Oxfam scandal.

The French charity Action Contre la Faim, for which he worked later in Bangladesh, said they were never made aware of those allegations.

David Holdsworth, Deputy Chief Executive of the Charity Commission said:Charities and dedicated, hard-working aid workers undertake vital, lifesaving work in some of the most hard circumstances across the world.

But it stressed the dismissal of Damien Berrendorf, who served as the Oxfam's country director in Haiti from 2012 to 2017, was "not related to sexual misconduct" and was "not connected to the case in 2011".

While Mr Van Hauwermeiren has confirmed having a sexual relationship with a local woman, he denied giving her money.

"Unless you report every serious incident or allegation, no matter how damaging to your reputation - we can not be partners", Britain's International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt told a conference in Stockholm, according to extracts of her speech released by her Ministry.

Oxfam's conduct over the claims, which surfaced last week, has been condemned by the Government - with a threat that millions in taxpayer funding could be cut off.
