Tiger Woods 'close' in comeback bid, McIlroy insists

Tiger Woods 'close' in comeback bid, McIlroy insists

As he attempts to rebuild his confidence for another run at a major, Woods believing he has the stamina to play regularly is a positive sign, said CBS golf commentator Nick Faldo.

As if Woods needed another reminder about the actuarial life table for elite athleticism, he slopped to a five-over-par 76 on Friday that resulted in a pink slip from the tournament. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were talking down the 17th fairway at Riviera when they stopped for a moment as McIlroy began rehearsing elements of a swing.

Woods had a 36-hole total of six-over par 148 - four shots outside the projected cutline as darkness fell and 13 shots off the pace set by McDowell and Cantlay.

"I need to miss the golf ball below the hole - when the greens get this fast and this bumpy, anything above the hole is virtually luck if you make the putt".

As McIlroy alluded to, Woods has scarcely played under conditions any less strenuous. "He's still figuring a few things out with equipment, I think, sort of in between drivers and whatever, but he's close".

It's cost me a lot of shots over the years.

Still, the ungraceful exit was disconcerting to Woods.

Woods, a 79-time PGA TOUR victor had a tough day off the tee and on the greens hitting just four of 14 fairways, one of which came after bouncing off a tree. It was always going to be a tough proposition in the second tournament of his latest comeback bid - three weeks after he finished tied for 23rd at Torrey Pines.

His mother, Kutilda Woods, who helped rear him about an hour's drive from Riviera, blended into the ample gallery that strode every step with him. "I opened up with three missed cuts this year but walking away from them saying to myself, you know what, I'm really happy with what I'm doing, I'm really happy with the progress I'm making and just stick to the process", McDowell said. "The wind was switching all over the place for probably the first 12 or so holes I played and it was tricky".

While Tiger Woods missed the cut at Riviera, he'll confirmed he'll return to competition next week at the Honda Classic. "I knew that if I could get back to 100 per cent healthy then I would figure out the golf part". On Friday, news surfaced that Woods has committed to playing in next week's Honda Classic.

He could have taken more rest back home and worked on his game without the stress of a formal event.

Woods said he plans to remain at Riviera over the weekend to work on his game. "I've just got to play more tournaments".

"I kept missing it above the hole and that's what was ticking me off", Woods said.
